Back-to-School Toolbox For Students

Written by Mark Family WebWatch | Fave FWW | Subscribe to FWW

It’s that time of year when parents are celebrating and the kids are depressed. Yes: it’s back-to-school season. To help them get off to a great start, I’ve collected some online services meant to help them get and stay organized with their studies.

Note takers
What’s the key to good grades? I’m sure we’d all agree note taking is a critical skill for sure. You may recognize some of these from an earlier post here, but they’re so appropriate to this topic I just couldn’t pass them up.

Notefish - Just make annotations on a Web page and they’ll be there when you return. You can even share with others. It requires an add-on for Firefox or Internet Explorer.

6 Firefox Add-Ons That Boost Productivity

Perhaps you’re doing research on a new topic for your blog. Maybe you’re doing some shopping and you want to keep careful notes on how a product compares to another. Better yet, you could be planning a vacation (I’ve heard of those; they’re something I need to experience more often).

Here are six ways you can keep yourself organized when taking notes on Web pages.

At the beginning I tried to use Google Notebook but I found it too complicated and uncomfortable for such simple task as storing notes. The second was Notefish. I still use it and don’t want to move somewhere else.

L2eL - Learning to e-Learn » Notefish - a tool to support students researching using the Internet

I came across this free download through Computer Active magazine.  I was impressed by the usefulness of this tool and its ease of use.  I think Notefish would be useful for students to use when researching using the internet.  I found it helpful in collecting notes on Personalising Learning, collecting both text and images.  Notefish captures a link to the webpage that the notes are taken from.  I thought this was helpful for citing references and for collecting links in a similar way to deli.ci.ous.

What is Notefish?  It makes research conducted on the Internet a bit easier to preserve.  The Notefish logo is a cartoon fish made out of stick notes which I thought was clever and very Web 2.0ish.  Creating an account is free and the plugin is available for both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Yesterday I stumbled upon Notefish.com, which is another site that is supposed to make note taking from web pages easier and quicker. I have tried Google Notebook, Evernote, Kaboodle and each experiment did not last long due to some reason or another. But Notefish seems to be better than each of those, and does in fact make note taking painless.

I recently was made aware of a new web research tool, called Notefish, that seems much like Google Notebook in it's goals: to make web reasearch easier.

Like Notebook, it is a browser plug-in, but it doesn't provide the same user experience. The model of use is similar: you are browsing somewhere, you select text you want to save, and right click it (mac: hold mouse click) and you see new options allowing you to copy to Notefish.

Notefish is similar to Google Notebook but is less of an outlining tool, actually Notefish is a very simple but effective tool.
...
I really like Notefish because there is no fuss clipping a section of a page, or making your own notes, then you can drag ‘n drop…it’s visually smoother.

I consistently do a lot of research online, and without fail, I always end up with a collection of information that is varied and discombobulated. If I could pull most of the useful information that I need off of one page, then that would be great, but instead, I usually have to compile research from a number of different sources in order to be able to arrive at the conclusion that I’m looking for. Instead of having random bits of information stored all over your hard drive, Notefish encourages you to consolidate all of that research onto one simple page.

Long time readers of my blog know that I’m a big fan of OneNote. Heck, I’m a big fan of any tool that helps me stay organized. Working on a helpdesk, you’re always one phone call away from a fire that needs put out and distracts you from what you were doing, so I employ a number of organizational tools to help keep me on track regardless of what the phone calls may hold on a given day. So, when I saw a mention of Notefish today, I had to take a look.

Notefish Is A Neat Little Web-Clipping Solution (Bill's Web)

I’ve spent the morning playing with an online note-taking and storage program called Notefish. I really like it.

Notefish combines most of the things I want in a note/clip storage system, and doesn’t kludge it all up with unnecessary stuff.

On my Ubuntu notebook, I’ve found that I actually like Notefish about the same as Google Notebook.  On my Mac’s, it’s no contest - Notefish is vastly superior.

Okay, this is cool. « Engineering a New World

I’ve never found an easier way to concisely communicate a subject I found on the Internet.  It’s not the right tool for everything (i.e. ClipClip and Otavo and so forth are still up there.), but it is DAMN cool.
